October 2017 Favorites
Hey y’all it’s what you’ve all been waiting for… my October favorites!!! I’ve been slacking on my favorites posts, but they’re baaaaack since you guys really seem to enjoy them. I have a lot of favorites this month so find yourself a psl (pumpkin spice latte) and a cozy blanket it’s gonna be a long one 🙂

GUYS! I’ve been super into benefit products. They have such cute packaging and names I can’t resist. They’re also high quality products without burning a hole in your budget. They’re Real Mascara is a cult classic hence making it onto another favorites list, but the Quickie Contour Stick and Watt’s Up Highlighter Stick have made highlighting and contouring so much easier! You don’t get as much product as you would with the typical powder Hoola Bronzer or the liquid Watt’s Up Highlighter. The ease of using these products outweighs the amount of product since I don’t use them on an everyday basis.
Another cult classic is the Urban Decay setting spray. Whenever I wear makeup it tends to slide off my face. To avoid this from happening I never leave without spritzing a little bit of this on my face!
This is a new one for me! I’ve heard some beauty gurus talk about this primer and wanted to try it, but it was kind of pricey. Plus, I was still in love with my Smashbox Photo Primer. Why ruin a good thing? I’m SO glad I tried this though! It gives that “I just got a full night’s sleep” kind of healthy glow to your skin. Well worth the splurge if you ask me!
People Favorites
October was a month of finding amazing women!
Whitney Wolfe | CEO & Founder of Bumble and Co-Founder of Tinder
I just started listening to the Podcast “How I Built This” and Whitney Wolfe, the CEO and Founder of Bumble and Co-Founder of Tinder, was featured. It was really interesting to hear her speak about how Tinder came to be an online dating sensation and her experience with the allegations against her from one of the other founders of Tinder. I liked how she took her experiences and used it to fuel the creation of Bumble, where women have to make the first move in a female-male match or either sex in a female-female and male-male matchup. The idea is very different and really creative. I picked Whitney Wolfe as a favorite this month because she’s like a role-model to me as a successful woman in the tech industry.
Shawn Johnson | Olympic Gold Gymnast
Not only is she an amazing gymnast, but she’s super down-to-earth. Also as a former competitive gymnast she helped shape the American gymnastics movement. There was a point where not many people knew anything about the sport competitively. It was mostly something your parents had you do when you were three along with soccer. Gymnasts like Shawn Johnson inspired gymnastics movies and tv shows, like Make It or Break It and Stick It. Really cool stuff! Shawn is on my favorites list this month because she recently posted a video about her miscarriage with her husband Andrew East and reassured viewers that “we’re here for you guys”. It takes a lot of strength and courage to experience a miscarriage and share it with the world. You go Shawn Johnson! If you want to watch Shawn and Andrew’s video I’ve linked it here for you guys.
Carly Zakin & Danielle Weisberg | Founders of theSkimm
Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg founded theSkimm in 2012 an email chain that is sent out every morning Monday through Friday on what’s been happening in the news from pop culture to politics, it’s all there. I am personally subscribed to theSkimm and love it because as a busy college student I don’t always have time to read through multiple news sources and read a ton of articles. I’ll be lucky if I read all the CNN Breaking News notifications on my phone haha. So theSkimm is great because every morning I wake up and I can read a quick and quirky summary of the most recent events. You can also win a bunch of prizes from cash to cars by signing up! Carly and Danielle are on my favorites list this month because I LOVE their product! They are also both great examples of young women entrepreneurs!
Sign up for theSkimm here!
If you enjoyed my people faves this month look out for my upcoming post about nasty women!
Food Favorites
Pumpkin Alfredo Sauce
This sauce is really yummy and a healthy alternative to regular alfredo sauce! Get the recipe by following this link.
Butternut Squash Raviolis
I wish I knew how to make these, but I usually just pick them up pre-made at my grocery store. Butternut squash just reminds me of fall; it’s rich and creamy with a hint of sweetness for those with a sweet tooth like me! I like to pair it with a finishing butter or a regular red sauce to balance out the sweetness.
Veggie Stir fry
I came up with this recipe on my own, even though it’s not anything new haha. Trevor loved it the first time I made it and it’s perfect for those of you who participate in Meatless Mondays! Since its only ingredients are rice, broccoli, tofu, and sesame garlic sauce.
Simple Mills Pumpkin Muffins
These muffins are…. Somewhat healthy haha, but they are absolutely delicious and super easy to make! Fun Fact: apparently Simple Mills now sells their stuff in Canada too, eh 😉
Apple Crumble
In my latest post I talked about how we went to Trevor’s grandparents for dinner. Trevor’s Grandma made this delicious apple crumble and I finally got the recipe. I’m obsessed!
Apple Cider
This is a classic October favorite. It’s not fall without some warm spiced apple cider or an apple cider slushie (my personal fave). No explanation needed.
Miscellaneous
Podcasts!
I’ve been really into podcasts lately and I think it’s a growing trend now, but I’ll listen to them in the car or while I’m doing homework. It’s my new favorite thing to do it throw on a podcast in the background while I clean my room or fold my laundry. These were my favorite this month. How I Built this is about entrepreneurs who talk about how they came up with their ideas and the progression of the idea up until now. It’s pretty cool because they have a ton of big brand names I see everyday, but never really thought about the thought process or people behind the scenes.
Why’d You Push That Button is new with only about two episodes, but the concept I find really cool. I’m always interested in why people do what they do and how the internet/social media is affecting us. This podcast is basically that.
